Why is ‘AI and Ethics’ work mostly a waste of time? It’s rife with amateurism in ‘ethics’, confirmation bias, anthropomorphism and activism.
19 mar. 2021 - I run an AI company, have invested in AI companies, taught the application of AI in my field, give talks and podcasts on the subject and have written a book on the subject. Yet, most of the questions I get on AI and data are what people see as ‘ethical’ issues. The problem is that they’re mostly not.

Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: Our AI Ethics Guidelines
30 nov. 2020 - No matter what technology we use, it is never an end in itself. Rather, it must help us deliver on a higher purpose: to make good journalism. This purpose-driven use of technology guides our use of artificial intelligence and all other forms of intelligent automation. We want to help shape the constructive collaboration of human and machine intelligence and deploy it towards the goal of improving our journalism.

Google Cloud Model Cards
Whether it’s knowing the nutritional content in our food, the conditions of our roads, or a medication’s interaction warnings, we rely on information to make responsible decisions. But what about AI? Despite its potential to transform so much of the way we work and live, machine learning models are often distributed without a clear understanding of how they function. For example, under what conditions does the model perform best and most consistently? Does it have blind spots? If so, where? Traditionally, such questions have been surprisingly difficult to answer.

Case Study PDFs
24 jan. 2019 - Below are a set of fictional case studies that are designed to prompt reflection and discussion about issues at the intersection of AI and Ethics. These case studies were developed out of an interdisciplinary workshop series at Princeton University that began in 2017-18. They are the product of a research collaboration between the University Center for Human Values (UCHV) and the Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP) at Princeton. Click the title of each case study to download the full document.

You’re Doing It Wrong: Notes on Criticism and Technology Hype
1 feb. 2021 - Maybe more people are writing about the real and potential problems of technology today than ever before. That is mostly a good thing. The list of books and articles from the last few years that have nuanced and illuminating perspectives on the contemporary technological situation is rich and long.

The Ethics of the AI Song Contest
18 oct. 2020 - Earlier this year, we were on the judging panel for the first international AI song contest. Run by Dutch national broadcaster VPRO, and inspired by Eurovision, the contest brought together 13 teams who battled it out, in front of the public and us judges, for supremacy in AI music. The idea wasn’t to have AI write an entire song – rather, it was to encourage human-AI collaboration.

AI and the Value Alignment Problem
23 dec. 2020 - How do we make sure that an AI does the right thing? How could we do this when we ourselves don't even agree on what the right thing might be? In this episode, I talk to Iason Gabriel about these questions. Iason is a political theorist and ethicist currently working as a Research Scientist at DeepMind. His research focuses on the moral questions raised by artificial intelligence. His recent work addresses the challenge of value alignment, responsible innovation, and human rights. He has also been a prominent contributor to the debate about the ethics of effective altruism.
