Whether it’s knowing the nutritional content in our food, the conditions of our roads, or a medication’s interaction warnings, we rely on information to make responsible decisions. But what about AI? Despite its potential to transform so much of the way we work and live, machine learning models are often distributed without a clear understanding of how they function. For example, under what conditions does the model perform best and most consistently? Does it have blind spots? If so, where? Traditionally, such questions have been surprisingly difficult to answer.

The Technology Behind Cinematic Photos
24 feb. 2021 - Looking at photos from the past can help people relive some of their most treasured moments. Last December we launched Cinematic photos, a new feature in Google Photos that aims to recapture the sense of immersion felt the moment a photo was taken, simulating camera motion and parallax by inferring 3D representations in an image. In this post, we take a look at the technology behind this process, and demonstrate how Cinematic photos can turn a single 2D photo from the past into a more immersive 3D animation.

Blackbird in the Coal Mine — Are Technology Platforms Stifling Black Community? — Part 1
12 oct. 2018 - On August 30, 2018 the New York Times ran a piece by Farhad Manjoo entitled, “Here’s the Conversation We Really Need to Have About Bias at Google” which explained why Trump’s unsupported claims about search engine bias against conservative voices potentially undermines the conversation various communities and experts have been trying to have for a very long time about the hidden, pervasive and often unintended bias of the search engine results. The 60 Minutes piece “How Did Google Get So Big?” which aired on September 23, 2018, includes discussion of the harmful impacts of the bias of search engines. Even while Google and others strive to modify their algorithms to produce results that are free from the hidden or unintended bias and also more capable of producing results individually relevant, I would suggest there is still the need to create communities of content in ways that don’t silo us as people, but provide an additive overlay.

Antitrust Suit Against Google is a Watershed Moment
29 oct. 2020 - The antitrust lawsuit against Google filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and eleven state attorneys general has the potential to be the most important competition case against a technology company since the DOJ’s 1998 suit against Microsoft. The complaint is broad, covering Google’s power over search generally, along with search advertising. Instead of asking for money damages, the complaint asks for Google to be restructured and its illegal behavior restricted.

7 sep. 2020 - You’ve probably heard of “open source software.” If you pay attention to the politics of this stuff, you might have heard of “free software” and even know a little about the ethical debate underpinning the war of words between these two labels. I’ve been involved since the last century, but even I never really understood what’s going on in the background until recently.

In de kloof tussen model en werkelijkheid
22 jan.
